The Day After and the Middle East Institute hold a roundtable on electoral reform in Syria

The Day After Organization and the Middle East Institute held a round table meeting to discuss the issue of electoral reform in Syria, on Monday 23 May.

 

The meeting discussed the current electoral system in Syria and the most important factors necessary for genuine electoral reform in Syria. Notwithstanding the need for a comprehensive political settlement. It also discussed the role that the international community- can or should- play in this reform process and in the upcoming elections.

 

The meeting also dealt with the guarantees that can be developed about the integrity of the elections, which are the incentives that can be put in place to increase real participation in future elections.

 

The meeting was attended by Mutasem Al-Syoufi, Executive Director of The Day After Organization, Muhanad Sharabati, human rights defender, Zahra Al-Barazi, Research Director at the Syrian Legal Development Program, and Mazen Ghariba, a researcher at the London School of Economics and Executive Director of the British Syrian Council.

 

The meeting was moderated by Charles. Lister, Senior Fellow and Director of the Syria and Counterterrorism Program at the Middle East Institute.
