With the participation of a group of researchers, experts, and specialists in property rights issues and electoral reform in Syria, The Day After Organization held a side event on the sidelines of the Brussels Conference to Support Syria and the Region, on May 2, 2022.
The first session discussed the issue of “Housing, Land and Housing Rights in Syria” and its connection to several sensitive files within the Syrian context, including:
Demographic change in Syria and how forced displacement became a catalyst in re-engineering the demographic identity of communities.
Transitional justice and reparation and compensation mechanisms, and their role in addressing HLP problems in Syria.
The constitution, how the Syrian constitution covers the property right, and the authority’s circumvention of the constitutional text.
Researcher Ayman Abu Hashem, researcher Raghdaa Zeidan, researcher Barbara McCallin, and human rights lawyer Anwar al-Majanni participated in this session, and it was moderated by Mutasem al-Syoufi, Executive Director of The Day After Organization.
The second session addressed the issue of electoral reform, as it is an essential element in countries experiencing political crises and wars, as is the case in Syria. The session provided an analytical and critical review of the legal and institutional frameworks related to elections in Syria and provided a vision and proposals for the process. elections in Syria.
It also shed light on the most important factors required to be included in the Syrian election system, to ensure a political transition in line with the demands of the Syrian people in building a state of law and citizenship based on equality for all.
The speakers in this session were Judge Khaled Adwan Al-Helou, Lawyer Roula Baghdadi, and human rights lawyer Anwar al-Majanni, and it was moderated by Mutasem al-Syoufi, Executive Director of The Day After Organization.
The two sessions were held via the Zoom platform and were attended by about 70 people. They included questions from the audience and were discussed with the speakers and the moderator.
