TDA Board Member, Afra Jalabi spoke on a panel in U.S. congress, Wednesday May 25, during a briefing on New Approaches, Challenges and Policy Recommendations for Engaging in Syria, alongside 2 other panelists, including, Charles Listerfromt the Middle East Institute, and Hassan Hassan, Resident Fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy. The panel was moderated by Steven Heydemann, TDA advisory board member.
Mrs. Jalabi spoke to the following points:
– When we have a reduction of the means of violence the voice of civil society rises.
– Condemning the constant aerial raids, noting that the voice of Syrian civil society was hijacked from the sky (i.e. aerial bombardment).
– Describing the Syrian conflict as sectarian is misleading. Sectarianism has been the effect not the cause of this conflict.
– State terrorism has to be taken into account in Syria. 90% of the killing in Syria is by the regime, and the criminals should be held accountable.
